This Tiramisu French toast is a twist to the classic treat. It’s so delicious and unbelievably easy. This Tiramisu French toast recipe is made with coffee, cocoa and liqueur soaked brioche, buttery and topped with creamy mascarpone , and cocoa powder dusted on top.
I’m a morning person. I drink my coffee, I love my sunrise runs, but, I don’t care for breakfast. And you are a morning person? you ask;-). Yup. I’m that annoying person who is stupidly cheerful first thing. I love the early morning light and the birds chirping and dewy grass and a cuppa coffee.
I wasn’t a no-breakfast person growing up. Mom had the most delicious south Indian breakfast ready for me by 8.00 a.m and I didn’t have to move a finger. It was downright comfort home cooking. Weekends were different though. Dad took out his apron and the only vintage beater we had. The one with two whips, a handle to turn the whip.. remember?…. Good quality bread was key. A classic french toast, one of my dad’s specialties. It was simple: eggs, milk, sugar and cardamom. “Whip till it froths, dip the bread for no more than ten seconds on each side”, he said. Ghee laden, crispy and the best french toast. I enjoyed it! Those mornings felt very hoity-toity, with forks and all, nothing like my usual.
Now, mornings look more like a commercial for windex. Chores, chores and giving into my OCD state of mind. Weekends are special though. French toast mornings are even more extra special, it reminds me of daddy.
This is a twist on the classic that you will love, Tiramisu French Toast. My all time favorite treat apart from honey cake, is tiramisu. I will have tiramisu in any form and this has become my new favorite.
Classic French Toast
The ingredients for the best french toast recipe is :
- Bread – Challah, a good white bread or for that extra special touch, a brioche.
- Eggs
- Milk – Use whole milk, or any of your favorite milk alternative.
- Salt – add a pinch of salt to balance the flavors and sweetness
- Sugar – use any sweetener to use based on your personal preferences.
- Flavorings – I personally love cardamom, but, vanilla extract and ground cinnamon for a classic French toast flavor. You can omit the cinnamon, if you prefer or add more for a more pronounced cinnamon French Toast.
- Butter or Ghee– melted on the griddle for cooking and then add a pat for serving, if desired
- Maple syrup – real maple syrup is a must!
How to make Tiramisu French Toast
The main ingredients for a classic french toast plus everything you need to make a tiramisu is what’s needed to make a Tiramisu French Toast. You need: eggs, milk, pinch of salt, sugar, coffee, cocoa, any liqueur of your choice(optional). Since I make this for special occasions, I use a brioche loaf, it is buttery and delicious. Mascarpone and whipping cream generously drizzled over the best french toast, with some dusting of cocoa powder is HEAVENLY.
- ⅓ cup mascarpone cheese
- ¼ cup light whipping cream or coconut cream or cashew cream
- 2 tbsp powdered sugar/confectioners sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tbsp coffee granules/powder or espresso
- ⅓ cup sugar (add less or more)
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- pinch of salt
- 2 tbsp coffee flavored liquor(kahlua or irish coffee liqueur) - optional
- 1 cup whole milk
- Add whipping cream and mascarpone to a mixing bowl and beat on medium speed with electric mixers (or use a stand mixer). Slowly add sugar and 1 tsp vanilla extract and whip to any consistency you like. I like it like a sauce, but if you prefer a stiffer cream, whip it to that consistency. Set aside in the refrigerator.
- Whisk together eggs, coffee powder or espresso, cocoa, liqueur, milk, salt, sugar, in a flat-bottomed pie plate or baking dish. Place bread slices, one or two at a time, into the egg mixture and flip to make sure both sides of bread are well-coated. Soak for 10 seconds or 20 seconds for a more soaked version.
- Melt butter in a large skillet or on a griddle. Place bread slices in skillet or on griddle and cook on medium heat until golden brown on each side, about 2-3 minutes.
- Serve immediately with cream and sprinkle of cocoa powder. If you don't serve it immediately keep warm in oven until ready to serve, but no longer than about 30 minutes.
You are simply dipping your bread slices into the egg mixture. If you leave your bread in the mixture for an extended amount of time, it will absorb more liquid and take longer to cook through.
