The vibrant color of blood oranges makes this blood orange fizz a beautiful drink and absolutely delicious and special.
It’s January and there is an abundance of blood oranges in my farmers market and I cannot get enough of it. Even better when a friend who has a major green thumb, with a large yard who grows all sorts of citrus trees shares some of her precious stash. She is like, I better get to it before my squirrels. I get lucky because she doesn’t know what to do with all the beauties. It’s probably my favorite citrus fruit, so I happily offer to take any amount she gives:).
Few weeks and it’s gone. POOF. And we have to wait a year for blood orange season.
So, I try to make the most of this beautiful red fruit season. Seasonal fruit drinks are the best. While I like to make my watermelon lemonade in summers, blood orange fizz is definitely my winter drink.
All for the COLOR.
For some weird reason, I don’t make cocktails a lot. We have a glass of wine and we call it a day. But seasonal fruits like blood oranges always get me very giddy with joy. The first thing I make when I get my hands on this fruit, is a cocktail and then I’ll sit down to try and bake with them.
Blood Orange Fizz
There’s not a lot that this fruit needs, a splash of tequila or just top it with some sparkling wine and it creates this super impressive drink. This blood orange fizz is margarita like in a way, since I like to add flaky salt in the rim, and I think it counteracts the some what sweet drink. Use Martinellis sparkling cider for a non alcoholic version. Citrus with some salt is always a nice touch.
This cocktail works, it’s absolutely impressive and easy to make.
Here it is my winter favorite cocktail and I hope you get to make it.

Indeed, their season is short and like you, I’m making the most of these beauties! What a fabulous flavor pairing too, Ash! I love champagne and blood orange together – but always seem to go for the gin! lol… The color is SO vibrant and it makes me happy. I’ll be making this for my mom when she arrives! She’s turning 70!
