This is a month of celebration. Celebration of a woman. Goodess Durga in all her forms.
Entire India will celebrate Navaratri and Durga Pooja. Celebrating the victory of good over evil.
Everyone celebrates festivals for different reasons.
And when people do draw a boundary between spirituality and religiosity, they are often making a political or moral statement rather than describing what they believe.
To me, festivals have a deeper meaning.
Because we really have to have some life in our life. Because life is not only about waking up to the alarm and running through your quotidian routine. Because life is not only about knowing yourself but is also about knowing and exploring life around you.
With the changing world, celebrating festivals is not limited to its core cause. With time, the reason of celebrations are modified in today’s world, people are too busy for social connections. These festivals/celebrations gives the person reason to enjoy, to mingle and to live few peaceful moments, away from stress and worries of a mundane life. Festivals can also mend the hearts and bind relationships. It’s a fresh, leaving behind negativity and looking forward to a bright new future. The true meaning of celebration is to start afresh, to see the positives and fill our lives with love.
Cleaning of your home representing a clean mind. Fasting or having some restrictive food habits, just means self control. Visiting friends means connections. Prayers brings the family together and a calm atmosphere, and some higher power you fall upon.
Festivals are important to give a meaningful boost to our lives, removing negativity and pressure, festivals fills it with joy and peace. Every religion has different festivals and may be the reason to celebrate them are different but goal is same-to celebrate life.
Green Peas Curry with Papad
Papad curry is very popular in Rajasthani cooking and in fact many parts of India. South India has a few Appalam/Papad curries and this is not one of them.
I happily take full credit for this recipe. I absolutely enjoy how the dried green peas curry tastes, It’s substantial and feels special. Add papad to it and it becomes extra special.
Soaking the green peas overnight is a must. Cook the peas in a pressure cooker or instant pot. You could use fresh green peas, but the taste will vary a bit.
In this curry, make sure to use plain papad.

Millets Roti – https://www.foodfashionparty.com/2018/10/gluten-free-roti.html
- Dry green peas - ½ cup soaked overnight or for ease use frozen large peas
- 4 papadam - toasted over flame or microwave. Deep fried is even tastier
- 2 tsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 small red onion, very finely chopped
- 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- ⅓ tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tomatoes pureed
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 cup water or you could use coconut milk for extra richness
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp garam masala
- cilantro to garnish and some green chilies
- Soak the dried green peas in 3 cups of water overnight. Next day, cook the peas over stove top which will take an hour or more or Cook in pressure cooker for 3 whistles with some salt. You could also cook this in an instant pot. Once it's cooked, set aside.
- Take a sauce pan or a large pot. Keep it on medium heat, add the oil. Let it get hot, add the cumin seeds and let it brown and toast a bit. Add the onions and saute for about 1 minute before adding the ginger garlic, turmeric, chili powder and saute for another minute until the raw flavor of the ginger garlic goes. Add the tomato puree and sugar. Saute this for about 5 minutes on medium to low flame. Add 1 cup of water and garam masala. Simmer this for another 5 minutes. Add the cooked green peas and simmer and boil for 2 minutes. Now add the papad which is toasted or deep fried, break it apart and add it. Boil for 3-4 minutes. If the liquid is getting too thick, add another cup of water. Toss in some cilantro. Turn off the heat and serve hot with rotis or chapathis.
