This Simple Grilled Spicy Yogurt Chicken Recipe has a few ingredients in the marinade that makes it juicy, flavorful and absolutely delicious. It’s the best grilled chicken I’ve made. You’ll make this recipe again and again!
And just like that summer is here. Summers in Cali can be really harsh, but the evenings are like a dream.
People who are not from here love to talk about Mark Twain’s quote that goes “the coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco.” As September and October roll around, while they get trapped in their homes due to polar vortexes and hurricanes we’re sitting in cotton shorts and T-shirts, hiking and going to the city in a thin sweater. And that right there, that pretty much sums up why Indian summers* in SF are better than all other summers.
San Franciscans love to hang out at the beach in the peak of summer, clear skies, and no humidity. We are surrounded by water, it should be humid, but it’s not. There’s music festivals in the beaches, in parks and in parking lots too. There’s rooftop parties, Oktoberfest, Opera in the park and Dolores park, the best! So many beautiful places to hike, so many places to just chill. Wherever you go, you’ll see bonfires and grills smoking up.
You will love it year-round, but you, like, reeeeeallllly loooooove it during Indian summer.
The Perfect Grilled Spicy Yogurt Chicken
This grilled spicy yogurt chicken is one of my back pocket meals and it turns out great every single time. Make sure to soak the chicken overnight if you can. Use full fat yogurt and try not to skimp on the spices. The flavors really work great once it’s soaked and they grill up like a dream.
Always grill the chicken on high heat. Here’s a LINK to always have the perfect grilled chicken.
Happy grilling Season!!
- Chicken breasts- 2
- 1 cup thick sour yogurt(not the greek kind)
- 2 tsp red chilli powder
- ½ tsp white pepper
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 1 tbsp chickpea flour
- 2 tbsp fresh ginger garlic paste
- ⅓ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- ½ gerkin cucumber or 1 Indian cucumber(seeds taken out) or 2 mini cucumbers
- 1 bunch or 1 cup packed mint
- 2-4 green chilies
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 tsp lemon juice
- 2 tsp olive oil
- Steel skewers or wooden. If using wooden, soak in cold water for an hour or two before skewing it.
- Clean the chicken and cut it into 2 inch cubes and dry it very well and add it to a large bowl.
- Add yogurt, chili powder, white pepper, garam masala, ginger garlic paste, chickpea flour,, oil and turmeric powder and salt. Massage everything very well with your hands. This process of massaging it for couple of minutes with ensure that you are breaking the protien up and making the chicken more juicy after it's baked. Cover the bowl and marinate it for at least 6 hours or overnight.
- When you are ready to grill or bake, skewer it tightly. Put it on a hot grill which is at about 450 degrees and grill it for about 2 minutes on each side and close and cook for 10 minutes. Once it is cooked, hit it with a squeeze of lemon juice and serve it as is or you can serve it with naan and rice.
- Alternatively, In the oven, you will have to bake it at 450 degrees for about 20 minutes.
- Serve with onion, green chutney and a generous drizzle of lemon juice.
- Put all the ingredients for the chutney in a blend and blend until a smooth paste.

This looks amazing, but I was wondering in which step shall I use the chickpea flour and the oil mentioned in the ingredients. I dont see them being mentioned in the grilling process anywhere. Can you kindly mention?

Hi
I would like to make this for my husband. I am vegetarian and haven’t cooked chicken before. I would prefer to bake this. Can I line a sheet pan with foil and put the pieces on there? Then, do I let it bake for the suggested time of 20 minutes and it’s done? Your help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks:)
Asha Shivakumar
You can definitely do exactly that. Like you said, like it with aluminium foil, if you have a baking rack(like a cooling rack), keep that on top and brush it with some oil and keep the skewers. Bake at 450 for 20 minuted and it’s done.
Hope you enjoy it.
