~The same boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg. It’s about what you’re made of, not circumstances.~
This tried and tested method for a good relationship I heard from my shrink years ago is a guaranteed way to keep arguments fair and civil.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about marriage, it is to not use the words “Never” and “Always”.
Try putting the word “never” in front of a sentence and see how it sounds. You “never” listen to me. Is that even true? It’s not something that relates to just a marriage, but with kids and friends too.
It has since, oddly enough, transformed my relationship with my husband and in parenting. I’ve made more of an effort to steer clear of these mounting exaggerations. It’s something I certainly practice in an argument, but also in everyday language, and in my own self-chatter. Self-love and respect are also as important as respect for your family.
It is a small difference, the tiniest shift in your words. But it makes for a paradigm shift between discussion and accusation. A simple mistake or ignorance doesn’t have to turn into an accusatory remark of failure.
It is surprisingly hard to do, leaving out the two words.
Your husband comes home late consistently for the last month. You are annoyed. Instead of saying, “You never come home early”, which is not the truth, you say: “Is everything alright at work? You seem to be coming home late these days”… See how the reaction is. Firstly, you are concerned if everything is alright with at work, and secondly, you are putting out the point that he’s coming home late too. With the former, your husband’s reaction becomes more rigid, like a hard-boiled egg, while with the latter, he becomes softer and more malleable, like the boiled potato.
Another one of those examples would be when your child comes home with a bad grade. Instead of thinking that he will always make silly mistakes and that he will never get better in this subject, it’s much better if he approaches the issue as it is: that he had a bad day and has to learn how to move forward. Again, if the kid is rigid, he will not improve. If the kid approaches the situation with more flexibility, he can improve and become more confident.
Try it out and see..
And a funny thing, did you notice how I connect food to life, quite a bit?;)
Hasselback potatoes are a type of baked potato which has the fancy accordion cut and a special infused-oil, which makes it flavorful and pretty. These spicy Hasselback potatoes and eggs are baked with an oil which is tempered with cumin, asafoetida, and all Indian spices.
Side dishes are typically not the star of the dinner table until they look as pretty as this! These crispy roasted hasselback potatoes eggs are an irresistible addition to any meal or take it to a picnic. There are two benefits to cutting these potatoes into thin slices: they gain a fancier appearance while also making them cook faster.
An added bonus of the extra crevices is that they allow the sauce to seep into the spud and infuse more flavor. To round out the recipe, fresh herbs, and seasonings make this side dish a must for your next meal.
Selecting the right potatoes for roasting is essential. For this recipe, I chose spuds that are crisp on the outside but with a creamy center. The thin skin allows the centers to burst when bitten into, creating a delightful velvety texture.
A foolproof kitchen hack that I learned to prepare these Hasselback potatoes is to use a large skewer when cutting the slits. Pierce the potato in the bottom carefully leaving 1/2 inch on the bottom, and cut the potatoes. I find this method so much better than using two chopsticks.
- 10 -12 mini potatoes
- 4 eggs, hardboiled
- ½ tsp salt and pepper
- 5-7 garlic, thinly sliced lengthwise
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 3 tsp finely chopped chives or 10-15 stalks chives
- ⅓ tsp fennel seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- ⅓ tsp chili powder
- 3 green chilies thinly sliced
- ¼ tsp turmeric
- ¼ tsp salt
- Wash the potatoes very well and dry it out. Take a skewer and pierce it through the bottom of the potato(as shown in the pic), leaving about ¼ of an inch in the bottom. Thinly slice it till you hit the skewer. Carefully remove the skewer and add it to a baking tray.
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees if you plan to bake it. You can cook them on a stove top too in a heavy bottomed cast iron pan.
- Arrange all the potatoes in the pan. Tuck in the thinly sliced garlic in the cuts of the hasselback potatoes. Sprinkle it with some salt and pepper. Try rubbing it inside the cuts without breaking the potatoes.
- In a small saute pan, add the olive oil. After it gets hot, add the mustard seeds, fennel seeds, cumin seeds, green chilies and chives. Keep the heat to medium. After 30 seconds, add the chili powder, turmeric and turn off the heat. Add salt and mix well.
- Drizzle this on the potatoes and pour it in the cuts of the potatoes. Bake for about 20 minutes until it is fully cooked.
- Take it out on a serving platter and add the eggs. Drizzle the remaining tempering on the potatoes.
- Garnish with some dill or cilantro.
