This is an easy project and the best lip balm you’ll ever use. Tint them to the color you like and it give a little color and these make great gifts. This is the BEST TINTED LIP BALM EVER.
So random right?!!
I do love to make DIY products. I’ve wanted to share these for so long. My stash got over, and it was the perfect time to make, shoot and share. They are so simple, and so much better than the commercial ones. The best part is that it’s customizable. Makes great gifts.
A funny story I wanted to share though…..
It was his last week of 8th grade. My teen and his friends all decided to gift each other small gifts. He had plans, he came with me, and got his 14 best friends small perfect gifts. He sat all weekend and wrote out cards. Friday came, and it was their last day. There were emotions, and hugs, and more hugs. They had to push us out to close the gates at 6.00 p.m. We got back home talking all the way how he went to that school all his life and his feelings. I was a tear ball. It was just such a bitter sweet moment. We got home, and the teen decided to open all his gifts………
One by one, he opens and reads, falls on the ground and starts laughing. I came into his room hearing his laughter and he explains why he felt it was hilarious… Guess what…. All of his friends, even without consulting each other, got him chapsticks. Expensive, simple and boxes of it.
That is how much we love lip balms. That is why we make lip balms at home, and well, just an FYI all that lip balm bounty lasted him a year:).
Here’s what you’ll need!
Base:
Organic Beeswax Pastilles (Essential ingredient) This is the hardening agent.
Raw Cocoa Butter (this)
Organic Shea Butter (or this) It’s got natural healing benefits, good on frost bites, insect bites, skin burn, allergies.
Raw Honey (optional) It has antioxidants and healing agents and a natural moisturizer.
OILS:(options) You don’t need all, one is good enough or a mix of couple.
Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
Almond Oil
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Avocado Oil
ADDITIONS:
Essential Oils: (Use any of one of your choice or a mix)
Peppermint Essential oil
Rose essential oil
Orange Essential Oil
Vitamin E oil (all natural preservative and also acts as a sunscreen)
Flavorings:
Cacoa powder or Raw Cocoa Ball(find it online and it is pictured in the ingredients)
Cinnamom powder (It’s a plumping agent)
Bright Lipsticks or mica(find on amazon) for coloring or bright eyeshadows work too
VESSELS:
You can certainly reuse containers that you already have.
Other options:
BIODEGRADABLE PAPER LIP BALM TUBES
Chapstick Tubes
Clear containers
Slide Top Metal Tins
You need a metal pan, a small mixing glass bowl. Chopsticks.
- 1 tablespoon organic beeswax
- 1 tablespoon Cocoa butter
- ½ tablespoon Shea butter
- 1 tsp extra virgin organic coconut oil
- ½ tsp almond oil
- ½ tablespoon avocado oil
- ¼ tsp manuka honey or raw honey
- 3-4 drops vitamin e oil
- 2-3 drops of Pure organic orange oil (for Orange creamsicle flavored)
- 2-3 drops of Peppermint extract oil(not water based) ( for peppermint flavored)
- 1 pod Vanilla beans (for Orange creamsicles)
- ⅓ teaspoon grated cacoa (for Cocoa flavored)
- pinch of grated fine cinnamon (for cinnamon flavored or for a lip plumping chapstick)
- thin sliver of bright Lispstick of your choice to tint the chapsticks or ½ tsp of Mica powder
- In a shallow bowl, add 2-3 inches of water. In a measuring cup or any glass jar, add the bees wax and set in simmering water. Stir with a wooden stick until it is completely melted.
- Add the cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil, avocado oil, almond oil and melt everything. Once it's all melted, take it off the heat. Add the essential oils, any color of your choice, vanilla bean or cinnamon or cacoa. Mix well and pour it in the tubes or tins.
- Let it cool and harden in room temperature.
- You can use them immediately or let it season for a couple of weeks in the refrigerator to a couple of months. They stay good in the refrigerator for up to 2 years.
With oils too, you can use one or all but keep the quantities intact. If you use a lot of oils, it might melt fast.
For flavorings, you can omit the essential oils.
For HUMID and hot climate, add another tbsp of beeswax so it doesn't melt soon.
Hope you get to make it sometime. Might seem like a lot of ingredients, but you shop once and you can make a lot of products with this or put it in the refrigerator and it keeps well for a while. Please tag me if you do make it.

Ha! Ha! What a great story. . .I guess your son has been crowned the Chapstick King. There are worse reputations to behold. As for me. . .I always have something slathered on my lips. It’s usually lipstick. . .but bedtime and gym time calls for lip balm. I’m partial to Vanilla Peppermint. . .but with my thin lips. . .perhaps I should be reaching for Cinnamon. 😉
Asha Shivakumar
Lol….totally the C King. My favorite is the Cinnamon too and I don’t have thin ones;).xx
Shashi @ RunninSrilankan
Oh my gawsh – your son sure has a reputation – I have to agree with Lynn, he indeed is the Chapstick King – though I bet he likes your DIY ones more! Asha these make for such a lovely gift and I bet they taste and smell way, way better than the store bought ones!
Asha Shivakumar
He is funny kid, he definitely has his preferences, the chocolate one;). They are such great gifts Sashi, I boxed a few for their teachers. It’s fun.
Hope you are doing well. Hugs.

How fun is this!? And such a funny story – totally get the point that chapstick is huge in your house. I could not live without my lip balm…I’m love the Fresh Sugar ones but it’d be great to save some money and make my own! Great fun DIY and the lip balms look very professional! Great job! And so exciting to finish 8th grade!!! Good luck!
Asha Shivakumar
Thanks so much my friend. The best part is it’s so easy and so much fun to do. Me too, can’t live without it.

Never thought of making my own lip balm! I gotta tell Mrs KR about this — she buys chapstick by the case. Well, actually by the box — maybe a dozen or two at a time. Fun stuff — thanks.
Asha Shivakumar
She will love it. It’s so easy too.

Love DIY. I may never have the patience to make these but if I ever do I will check your site. I just use vaseline on most days but love the flavored balms. Appreciate you sharing this!

LOVE diy products, Asha! We are big chapstick fans too and I love that you can customize your own flavors, colors, etc. Plus you know exactly what’s in them. These would make perfect gifts or party favors too…already thinking about all the delicious flavors I can create…I hope you do more of these posts in the future, my friend. 🙂
Asha Shivakumar
You would do wonders with the flavors, can’t wait to see it when you recreate it. Thanks so much my dear for stopping by. I am absolutely looking forward to be creating more posts like this.

Amirah @CamelMirror
I love this. I always have lip problem. I can’t use the lipsticks out there because they contain all those chemicals. Never thought of making one myself! Will definitely try it out! Can you suggest where I can get those ingredients?
Asha Shivakumar
Thank you so much for your comment. I’ve linked all the products. Check it out. xx

I finally made them Asha… and I can’t thank you enough for this recipe. I did substitute some of the ingredients to what was available here like I used mango butter and instead of coconut oil.. I used ghee.. but stayed true to all your measurements. And the lip balm was perfect..a huge difference from the commercial ones. So..thank you for such a beautiful post!
Shibi@FlavzCorner
Oh wow!! This is a cool DIY project to do with kids. Absolutely loved it. Is there a natural shade we can use to get the color?
N Shankar
How do you source all the material for lip balms? Any pointers will be much appreciated.
