Happy Ganesha Chaturthi to all who celebrate!!
It is one of the biggest festivals of India this week. It is the birth of Ganesha, the Elephant God. To me, I love the vibes that this festival brings. I’m enamored with the colors and the mood it creates.
In short: Ganesha the Elephant God is always prayed at the beginning of anything important. So, this week marks the beginning of the many more festivals. Throughout India, this festival is celebrated in a grand manner. Large twenty foot to small five inch idols are made with clay, painted intricately, and decorated. The prep for this festival starts a couple of months before the actual day. Each household will have one particular style of Idol they will keep every year. They will bring Him with care and decorate Him with flowers. Food is key for this festival. Ganesha is supposed to be a food lover, especially sweets. You will see laddoos and modaks (sweet dumplings) prepared in every home in India. Kids will visit neighbors to see how the others have decorated their Ganesha. This festival can run anywhere from 1 to 10 days. At the end of the festival, the idols are immersed in water, the sea, and lakes. It’s quite an emotional moment. Until next year, they pray and send him off.
I absolutely love celebrating festivals here. It makes me feel closer to home and the kids get to experience what I had when I was growing up. They enjoy dressing up in new clothes, praying, attending the parties, and most of all, eating the food. Making coconut ladoos, modak, sheera cake, it’s all fun.
This year, it’s Chocolate Coconut Ladoos. Coconut ladoos are the easiest treat to make. It’s almost fudge-like and tastes amazing, a very quick and easy one. Add cashews to it and it adds another layer of nuttiness and richness to the coconut ladoos. Check out what I made last year: Moon cake with Nuts. Have a wonderful week everyone :).
While coconut ladoos are usually made with fresh coconut, this is the shortcut version and equally impressive one. Chocolate Coconut Ladoo is a favorite of mine because it comes together so quickly and when I give it to friends, they love it and are impressed at how simple it is.
To make the Chocolate Coconut Ladoo
I’ve used cashews as my twist to this recipe to make it richer and taste so good. Use dried unsweetened coconut flakes, powder it and use that. Using condensed milk makes this dessert a quick coconut ladoo recipe
Coconut Ladoo
Split the mixture in half and add chocolate to one of the instant coconut ladoo mixture, and add cocoa powder to it to bind well. Make ladoos and they stay good for 2 weeks.

- 2 cups dessicated dry unsweetened coconut powder
- 2 cups cashew powder(not too fine, keep it coarse)
- ⅓ cup condensed milk
- 1//3 tsp cardamom powder
- a pinch of saffron strands
- 2 tsp raw cocoa powder
- 2 tsp melted milk chocolate
- 1 tbsp butter
- Some dessicated coconut to roll the fude/laddoo balls in.
- Heat a non stick pan. Add the butter and let it melt on low medium to low heat. Add the powdered cashews and keep stirring to toast everything. Do not brown it. Toast for 3-4 minutes.
- Add the coconut powder, condensed milk and stir well to incorporate and cook for another 3-4 minutes on low heat/temperature.
- Take the pan off the heat and add the cardamom, saffron strands and mix well.
- Separate the mixture into 2 bowls. In one bowl add the cocoa powder and milk chocolate and mix very well.
- Make round balls and roll in some dessicated coconut.
- Stays good for 10 days in an airtight container, you could refrigerate it too. Just bring it to room temperature before serving.

Desis love their sweets! And ladoos are at the top of that list, although gulab jamuns are pretty amazing too. I’ve never had chocolate ladoos with actual melted chocolate in them. Sounds dreamy 🙂

Little Cooking Tips
Happy Ganesha Chaturthi Asha! It was really wonderful to read about the religious practice and traditions of India. Yours is a very rich, ancient culture with so many interesting aspects.
Those little treats look amazing! Very easy to make, perfect for serving friends. That is, if we don’t eliminate them ourselves first, munching on the couch 🙂
Thank you for the delicious recipe!

Asha, I love the story and hearing about your traditions I have always been drawn to Ganesha and have quite a few myself of varying sizes and I like the idea of decorating him. I never knew he was connected to food and it makes sense as I am delighted by him. The sweets look amazing and I can’t imagine how quickly they would be gone at my house. Enjoy this happy time.

Thank you Teri. It is a special day and food is a big part.

I did 5 stars but it came up as 4. Five stars all the way for some reason from a mobile device it’s hard to get the stars working properly

I can almost taste them, and feel the wonderful texture of these! And I remember those amazing moon cakes from last year. What wonderful treats you cook up! We are going to celebrate the mid-Autumn moon festival. I remember it being a big deal when I grew up in Hong Kong…now, it’s a lot more low-key but a great excuse to get together with family and enjoy mom’s (and I mean, my mom!) cooking! : )

Oh Asha I adore ladoos! I’ve never had chocolate ones – ever. These sound so incredible delectable – and as impressive as your moon cakes!

This post makes me so happy. I love ladoos and love this twist. Now that I will be in the SF area more – can’t wait for our chai and ladoo meet up 🙂
Honey, What's Cooking?
oooh yum yum.
Love that it only takes about 1/3 cup of condensed milk, not too crazy.
And coconut is good for you. It’s all justified. 🙂

Reading the recipe I got the impression ladoo are Indian flavored fudge balls, right? I am sure I’d enjoy them because 3 of my favorite ingredients are in the recipe: sweetened condensed milk, coconut, and cashew. This means I will have to try it.

I don’t know how I missed this recipe, Asha! Fudge and truffles are some of my favorite sweet treats to enjoy. I love how these are made with ground cashews too. I bet they’re super moist and flavorful. I believe I have almost all of these ingredients in my pantry so I will definitely need to try them for myself soon! I’ll let you now how it goes 🙂

Ash I’ve loved ladoos ever since watching that film Water! I didn’t realise that they were this easy to make. We have a shop that isn’t far from us that sells them and I’ve always bought them but thank you for the recipe!
